Artifact: A New Vision for Technology
Reflection:
I wrote a vision paper for the implementation of technology for changes I would like to see adopted by Hand in Hand Primary school. This artifact shows mastery of this standard as I addressed the use of technology for student achievement in a vision shared by administration, teachers, parents and students.
This vision statement was inspired by the Thomas County vision statement, along with the State of Georgia’s vision for technology use in schools. I further developed my view from the results a survey I created and emailed to our teachers. Our school currently does not have a vision statement for technology use and neither is it addressed in the school improvement plan. Therefore, there is a void in our schools mission and vision where technology is concerned.
Hand in Hand is only a two grade school consisting of pre-k and kindergarten. Therefore, a vision for the school must be one that adheres to the special needs of early childhood. Primarily, those needs should include integrating technology using research based practices. This can only happen if teachers are educated in integrating technology, not just training in how to use the hardware and software. Integration encompasses knowing how create lessons that are meaningful and engaging for student achievement.
I learned a great deal from this project and I will continue to add to that learning. I was amazed that Hand in Hand was the only public school in Thomas County without a technology plan. However, I was inspired by the county plan as it contained many of the components we learned about this year. This will help Hand in Hand formulate their vision for technology and make it fit the unique needs of the students. Collaborating with my colleagues to create a vision for our school for technology use, will help the entire staff take on more leadership roles and share in the ownership of the vision. I have asked our principal to dedicate a professional learning meeting in August, for the purpose of creating a vision statement.
If I were to create a vision statement for our school again, I would gather more information. The information needs to include exactly how primary grades integrate technology. Are there videos of teachers using technology for authentic learning with early childhood? I would like to see in real time teachers using technology in small and large groups, in centers and independently. What research based learner centered strategies are being used? I intend to find the answers to these questions this school year and help plan site visits either live or streamed for our faculty.
